Mutation never stops

A quick look at what mutations are and why they matter for the plants your business depends on.

estimated somatic mutations have arisen in commercial clonal-crop propagation pipelines since you opened this page

~1010 plants/yr in active clonal propagation worldwide × ~100 somatic mutations accumulated per propagation cycle ≈ 30,000/sec. Order-of-magnitude estimate; conservative midpoint of published rates.

Every time a plant is propagated, there is a chance for mutations, small genetic changes, to slip in unnoticed. Most are harmless. The wrong one, quietly multiplied through a propagation pipeline, becomes off-types, lost yield, and plantings that never perform the way they should. With decades of investment riding on a single planting, that is a risk worth knowing about.

One mutation. Then a million.

A mutation that arises during propagation is not a one-plant problem. Every plant descended from it inherits the same change, and after only a few rounds a single event can populate an entire shipment. Catching it early matters.

Clean clone    Mutated descendant. The mutation arises in Generation 1 and propagates to every offspring of the affected cell. Catch it at the source and you pull one batch. Catch it at scale and you’ve already shipped a million.
